How to Draw a BMW E46

To show you how to draw the BMW E46, we will use many straight and clean lines, since the car is largely defined by them.

This is a classic design straight from the 1980s and 1990s that was characteristic of the brand’s lineup.

How to draw a BMW E46: step-by-step tutorial

Step 1 – Sketch the BMW E46 silhouette

Begin by sketching the overall silhouette of the BMW E46 with a single light outline. Show a simple sedan profile with a slightly sloping hood, a smooth roof arc, and a short rear trunk. Keep the lines very light and mostly straight, with only subtle curves where needed. Avoid details in this initial step.

Step 2 – Add the wheel arches of the BMW

Add the wheel arches and define the lower edge of the body. Place two evenly sized arches and connect them with a straight rocker line. The E46 should look slightly sporty. Keep the arches simple, without thickness for now.

Step 3 – Define the front and rear bumpers

Refine the front and rear ends by adding the bumper shapes and basic light areas. Indicate the front bumper and headlight zone with simple geometric forms, and do the same at the rear for the taillights and bumper edge. Keep everything minimal and use straight lines. The E46 has a restrained design, so try to convey this.

Step 4 – Draw the windows of the BMW E46

Draw the window frame and roof of the BMW E46. Follow the roofline and define the upper edge of the side windows. Trace the hood, roof, and trunk. Then, draw the side part of the windshield. Use simple, confident lines.

Step 5 – Add the side mirror, pillars, and handles

Add the smaller exterior elements such as the side mirror and door handles. Place the mirror near the front of the window line and keep its shape simple. Draw the handles aligned across the doors of the BMW E46 body. Now, add the pillars inside the window frame.

Step 6 – Draw the doors of the BMW E46

Define the door seams and main body lines. Add simple vertical lines for the doors and a horizontal shape along the side to indicate the molding. Draw the bottom edge of the doors with a long simple line. Draw a small turn light between the front wheel arch and door.

Step 7 – Add the tire and rim circles

Draw the wheels by placing two accurate circles inside the arches. Try to make them centered and equal in size and shape. Add an inner circle to define the rim area. The wheel size should feel appropriate for a compact executive sedan.

Step 8 – Draw the BMW E46 rim spokes

Draw the hub in the center of the car wheels and build a simple, symmetrical spoke pattern radiating outward. You can add small elements such as bolts, but avoid making the rims too detailed so they don’t distract from the overall appearance of the car.

Step 9 – Clean up the car contours

Refine the entire BMW E46 drawing by strengthening the main contours and cleaning up construction lines. Go over the outer silhouette and key design edges with a darker line, and remove any unnecessary guidelines. Adjust small inaccuracies in alignment or proportion.

Step 10 – Finish the classic sedan drawing

Apply subtle shading along the lower body and under the bumpers. Shade the windows slightly darker than the body to separate the glass. Hatch certain areas, such as the moldings and pillars, to visually break up the monotony of the drawing. Add darker shading to the deepest parts of the body to increase contrast.
