How to draw a Subaru Impreza WRX: step-by-step tutorial

Step 1 – Mark the basic WRX rally car shape

Subaru Impreza is a quite small but nimble car, and in the very first step, we will display it. Outline the body in the form of a loose sketch as in the picture below. At this stage, it’s important to keep the outline really simple and mark the proportions of a rally car.

Step 2 – Sketch the slim glass line, wheels, and lights

In the second step, we usually add the most essential parts that are on all vehicles. Mark the window line, tires, and lights. All this should also be sketched with really loose lines. First, draw two circles for the wheels of your Subaru Impreza WRX. Next, add the window line as a thin band. Indicate the headlight at the front, and the taillight at the rear corner.

Step 3 – Sketch the Subaru Impreza WRX spoiler and door shapes

The doors and wheel arches are also considered integral parts. Let’s mark them too with light lines. First, sketch the arches above the wheels. Then, outline the doors as simple rectangles or squares. Add the side mirror near the A-pillar. Finally, sketch the spoiler above the trunk – a signature element of the WRX rally style.

Step 4 – Draw the Subaru signature hood and headlight

It’s time for details, and we traditionally start with the “nose” of the sports car. Draw out the entire front of the Subaru Impreza including the bumper, lights, and the front arch. Start tracing the headlight with sharp, aggressive angles. Don’t forget the hood scoop, one of the most recognizable WRX features, which should be placed in the middle of the hood. Strengthen the front wheel arch and detail the bumper.

Step 5 – Outline the WRX smooth roofline and windows

We turn to the cabin, but rather to the upper part. Here you need to trace this part of the body of your Impreza. Darken the roofline, making it flowing smoothly into the rear spoiler. Define the windshield and side windows more clearly, dividing them into front and rear sections with a visible pillar. At the same step, refine the mirror shape.

Step 6 – Define the Subaru powerful rear details

A very prominent part of this car is the big and cool spoiler. Let’s draw out the rear end of the Subaru Impreza WRX including this spoiler, bumper and rear light. First, strengthen the spoiler, making it broad and visible. Then, outline the rear bumper with dark strokes. Add the taillight as a simple horizontal block.

Step 7 – Finalize the Subaru WRX doors and handles

The side of the Subaru is not very different from any other car of a similar class. Trace the outline of the doors neatly. Place the handles just below the glass. Erase leftover construction lines around the doors and side skirt to clean up the profile. Additionally, darken the lower edge of the body and add decorative liens.

Step 8 – Draw the Subaru WRX rally complex wheels

Trace the tires and make them the as round as possible. Inside, add complex rim patterns – rally cars often feature multi-spoke or mesh-style wheels. Make the spokes radiate evenly from the center hub. Use your imagination and draw some interesting and unusual design for the Subaru Impreza rims.

Step 9 – Shade the body of your Subaru Impreza

Light and shadows will make your Subaru Impreza WRX drawing look more natural and voluminous. In addition to shadows, you can also paint this drawing to make the sports car even more real. Shadows should be added to the bottom edges of the details, to convey the light.

Drawing different Subaru Impreza generations

The team of DrawCarz.com loves sports cars, and especially if it is not an ordinary sports car. Here we showed how to draw a Subaru Impreza WRX – one of the most interesting Japanese sports cars.

The Subaru Impreza WRX has gone through several generations, each with design elements that make them different to draw.

The early 1990s versions are compact and simple, with less detailed external parts. When sketching these models, it’s important to keep the lines smooth, since they reflect the styling of that era.

By the 2000s, the Impreza WRX gained different features, such as round headlights in the “bug-eye” generation and later angular headlights in the “hawk-eye” version. Each of these requires slightly different treatment when drawing.

Modern WRX models show a much wider stance, strong character lines along the body, and a larger rear wing.

By comparing different versions in your drawings, you can practice adjusting proportions and details while keeping the overall WRX identity consistent.

By drawing different versions of this car, you will be able to learn to convey the era in which this car was created through design solutions typical of those years.
