How to Draw an American Truck

There are two super popular topics on DrawCarz – supercars and trucks. And the tutorial on how to draw an American truck relates to the second topic.

In our main truck drawing tutorial we have already shown you the most important principles of creating this type of car body.

In this guide we will focus on what are the most distinctive features of American trucks and how to recreate the on paper.

For this we will use the image of a Dodge truck, but by changing the necessary parts, you can draw a pickup truck from any other American manufacturer.

How to draw an American truck: step-by-step tutorial

Step 1 – Define the boxy cab and cargo part

At the very beginning, sketch the overall contour of the American truck. Outline the tall cab and extend the line into a large cargo bed. Try to make the silhouette boxy and massive, reflecting classic US truck design. You can adjust the shapes to convey the desirable pickup design.

Step 2 – Sketch the American Truck main parts

Sketch two wheel ellipses along the ground line. American tucks with heavy-duty suspension usually have larger wheel gaps, while lighter pickups sit lower. Above, mark the windshield and side windows. In some variations, the glass appears upright and blocky, while in others it is more slanted.

Step 3 – Mark the doors, bumpers, and rims

Add circular rims within the tires and surround them with arches. Some American trucks use squared arches, while others prefer rounded arches. Draw the doors with different proportions: smaller cabs have long single doors, while larger configurations include multiple shorter doors.

Step 4 – Refine the front of the vehicle

Outline the visible side edge of the grille, bumper, and headlamp. In heavy-duty trucks, the grille often takes up much of the nose. Lighter-duty pickups may feature simpler fronts with less ornamentation. Some designs highlight boxy headlights, while others incorporate narrow, elongated lamps.

Step 5 – Draw in detail the cab of the American truck

Trace the roof with smooth lines and refine the window frames. Some trucks have very flat and squared rooflines, while others feature slightly curved roofs for aerodynamics. Windows of American trucks can appear tall and rectangular on older styles, or shorter and sleeker on newer designs.

Step 6 – Finalize the doors and side surface

Strengthen the door contours with confident strokes. Add handles and simple surface creases. On utilitarian trucks, the body sides are plain. On premium or modern US versions, the sides may include sculpted lines or flared panels.

Step 7 – Draw out the American truck cargo area

Trace the long cargo box using clean and dark lines. Classic American trucks often had very square beds with tall sides, while modern versions sometimes lower the profile for easier loading. Rear lamps may appear large and simple on work-oriented designs, or smaller and stylized on more advanced models.

Step 8 – Add the spokes radiating from the hub

Inside each wheel, create the rims with a hub and evenly spaced spokes. Basic work trucks usually use simple steel-style rims, while more specialized versions might feature elaborate patterns or deeper offsets for off-road use. Tire thickness also varies, for example thin sidewalls for modern looks, or chunky tires for lifted trucks.

Step 9 – Add weight and volume to your US Truck

Erase remaining guides and begin shading with hatch marks. Add darker shadows to the bottom edges and inside the deepest places of the vehicle. A heavy-duty US truck benefits from darker, stronger shadows. Highlight the windows with clean simple strokes to indicate reflection.

Drawing specific American trucks

American trucks are defined by their sheer size and proportions. Another distinctive feature is the design language that emphasizes strength.

American trucks have always had a special place in automotive design. They stand out not only for their size but also for the way each brand interprets different design ideas. While all of them share the same basic proportions, the design codes differ.

To better understand these differences and improve your American truck drawing skills, it’s useful to look at a few of the most representative models.

Ford trucks are often seen as the benchmark for this body type. Drawing a Ford truck helps practice sketching a US truck in its pure form and use the principles from this guide on a specific model.

The Dodge Ram has a more muscular look, with a dominant front grille. It represents the more aggressive side of American truck design. When drawing a Ram, you will practice another type of US pickups with a slightly different design idea.

Chevy trucks bring a slightly different philosophy, but use the sample basic principles of US truck design. To practice, visit our Chevrolet truck drawing guide.

In our Jeep truck drawing tutorial you will practice an off-road point of view in your work. In this lesson we will sketch a pickup truck from one of the most popular American companies.
